    Dear NCC singers,

    Happy New Year!

Though the ending of last season was a disappointment because of the cancellation, I was proud of your preparation and execution of a challenging work. Hopefully, we can build on that success as we look to diversify our programming and draw in more singers.

With the help and encouragement of Lucas, our spring concert will celebrate the works of Leonard Bernstein. Having just seen “Maestro”, and reading reflections on that movie, I discovered how Bernstein was frustrated that he was primarily known for his work with “West Side Story”. At least in his lifetime, he did not receive the recognition for a massive library of works that, though original and powerful, were always in the shadow of that monumental musical. Our program will include some of his lesser-known works along with a few selections from West Side Story. We have also invited Halcyon to perform his composition, “The Lark.”

Here is the proposed program with each piece linked to a recording. (Some will be for solo voices or smaller groups. “Mass” links are from the full production, not the arrangement from which we will work.)

    From “Mass” Concert Selections

    1. Antiphon: Kyrie Eleison
    1. Hymn and Psalm: “A Simple Song”
    1. Responsory: Alleluia
    1. Prayer of the Congregation (Choral: “Almighty Father”)
    1. Trope: “I Don’t Know”
    1. Meditation (Tacet)
    1. Gloria Tibi (children’s chorus)
    1. Gloria in Excelsis
    1. Trope: “Half The People”
    1. Trope: “I Believe In God”
    1. Our Father
    1. Trope: “I Go On”
    1. Sanctus
    1. Agnus Dei
    1. Secret Songs

    The Lark (Halcyon)

    Two Hebrew Songs
    Simchu na
    Yig dal

    From West Side Story
    Somewhere
    Finale Act 1 (smaller group)

    From Candide
    Bon Voyage
    Make Our Garden Grow

Inspired by the success of Matthew Shepherd, which allowed for more solo opportunities, I am hoping this program will offer the same to more among us.

I have ordered 65 copies of the Mass. If you wish to purchase your own, you can order through JW Pepper or Sheet Music Plus. You may also purchase it from the chorus.

Rehearsals begin January 23 in the Band Room in the Morse Arts Center.
Most important…CONCERTS WILL BE APRIL 26th and 27th

    Alan
